Family
Well-Being Breaks - Completed Spring 2004
|
The
scheme was first piloted in February 2000, when 20 families went to
a retreat and educational centre in Dorset. Supported holidays
combine a relaxing break with a programme of workshops and therapies
designed to encourage self-confidence, greater closeness within
families, new skills and a wider sense of community. Families are
referred in groups, so when they return home they can support each
other within their community.
"…I have studied
massage – after having one on holiday – and I now plan
to have a new career…"

Valuable benefits
Supported holidays offer
unique benefits. They:
|
build into the
government’s social inclusion policy with its recognition of
the vital importance of holidays and leisure
…I could not have
managed a holiday without this help… now I know I
am not alone…
|
|
offer a holistic
approach to health and well-being
…we have a greater
family togetherness even things like making sure
we have our meals together and
trying to give time to each other…
|
|
provide the chance to
learn new skills which can be taken back into the family and
wider community
…I have studied
massage – after having one on holiday – and I now plan
to have a new career…
|
|
help parents and
children to acquire a sense of self-worth, with the positive
results this brings
…my son has gained so
much self confidence from the holiday..it was
a fantastic change…
|
|
enable families from
the same area to get to know each other and maintain
supportive contact
…I don’t feel so
self-destructive about myself and I do try to look at
positive aspects of myself…which
stops me feeling so low…
|
|
enable families to
build a sense of community and so create an environment in
which anti-social behaviour is less likely
…I am emotionally
stronger now and calmer. I try not to let things get
me down as this can affect your ability to be patient
with your children. I see one family whom we met on holidays. I also see other families from the
Welfare
Centre once a week… |
