Holidays are a vital event in personal well-being.  It is tragic that so many people still have no holidays away from home.”   Richard Layard

Professor Richard Layard, author of Happiness: Lessons of a New Science

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor
“A simple break away from the pressures of home brings families closer together and better able to face the future.  This is particularly true for those families who can least afford a holiday.

Helping to build stronger, happier families should be of importance to everyone who values the well being of their community and society.”

Annual Review launched at ABTA reception
Alison Rice interviewing pupils and parents
Over one hundred FHA supporters and beneficiaries gathered at the head offices of ABTA on Tuesday 8 April to mark the launch of the charity's 2007 Annual Review.

Charity chairman, Ian Reynolds, welcomed the news that the charity had helped over 1,400 families in the past year and that some 1,600 families will be helped with a holiday in 2008.  He noted that this target will be aided by an anticipated income of over £1.3m in this current year.

Alison Rice (above), trustee, interviewed pupils and parents from an East End of London primary school with which the charity is running a joint project to measure the value of breaks for families.  And, in addition to reporting on advances in the work of the charity over the past year, a number of awards were presented to a number of special supporters.

Michael East with his award
The Joan & Pat Laurance Vase is a our top annual award and was presented to Michael East.
This important award recognises Michael East of The Eastcastle Management Group who has been a staunch supporter of the FHA for many years.  Eastcastle includes Argyle Recruitment which has organised the Fun Run at the ABTA Convention for several years.  Argyle is central to the organisation of the event and helps to recruit runners and to publicise the event.  They have used their networks to recruit sponsors for the event each year ensuring that it generates substantial income for the FHA.  Last year the event raised £4000.

Argyle’s sister company, Kingley Event Management has also helped us raise funds over recent years.  Funds have been raised at many of Kingley’s events, including the prestigious British Travel Industry Hall of Fame Dinner in 2006 which raised £13,500, the E-tid Lunch at the ABTA Travel Convention last November raised over £3,500 and previously Kingley organised two very successful FHA Black & White Balls and in the year 2000 they raised over £100,000.

The 2007 Annual Review can be downloaded as a pdf document by clicking on the picture to the left.

The Review includes an audio CD that contains recordings of various people describing their work with the FHA and  also recordings of families talking about their holidays and breaks.

Peter Long delivered a strong message of support for the Family Holiday Association to over 1,200 travel industry colleagues gathered at the Travel Trade Gazette (TTG) Annual Awards ceremony on the 13th September.

Peter Long is the Chief Executive of one of Europe's largest travel companies and his appeal to the audience resulted in thousands of pounds being donated to help disadvantaged children and parents enjoy something people in the travel trade take for granted - a simple break.

John McDonald, FHA Director, said "Peter Long's address is testament to the important support provided to the FHA by people who make their living from helping people go on holiday.

Social tourism consortium launched at joint UNISON and FHA forum

"We believe too many people are excluded from the benefits provided by even a simple break away from home.  Together we will work to promote social tourism for the improved well-being and happiness of society"

A wide range of organisations including travel companies signed the above declaration supporting the promotion of social tourism in the UK.  The forum heard from Gordon Marsden, MP for Blackpool, a senior UNISON official and representatives of travel companies Butlins and Haven.

FHA Director, John McDonald, said "There was general agreement that the issue of social tourism had to be pushed up the political agenda and that to do so it would be better if we worked together."

It was agreed that a working party of interested organisations would meet to consider how best a consortium would work and to report back at a meeting to be scheduled in the next few months.

If you would like to be kept up to date about the work of the consortium - please let us know - click here.

Latest news - 25 July2006

In a very moving article in The Times on the 25 July 2006, Libby Purves wrote about the importance of family holidays to her and her family and the stock of happy memories they provide; memories that can sustain you at times of upset and grief.

Libby argues strongly that taking a holiday with the family is a priority and she went on to say that if you had any money left after paying for your break then you should send it to the Family Holiday Association and help another family benefit too.
